Chris May

Born in Manchester, UK in 1962, Chris left school to study engineering at the University of Leicester, and subsequently completed a postgraduate course in design, manufacturing and management at the University of Cambridge. His first foray into paying tax was at Cadbury Schweppes where he performed a number of roles designing, commissioning and running production lines while indulging his passion for chocolate, a passion he still holds today.

After a brief spell back at Cambridge working in academia, he moved into healthcare where he has spent the last 35 years of his career, initially in hospital management, followed by six years as a management consultant, primarily developing business cases for new hospitals, including building projects in Bath, Bristol, Swindon, Worcester, Edgware, and SW London.

In 2000, he founded Mayden, aiming to surface the vast wealth of data collected by the NHS and put it to good use. The company's first major project was to build the digital systems for the national cancer programme, which aimed to remove the postcode lottery in cancer care, an ambition which was largely achieved over the subsequent ten years. Mayden subsequently developed a clinical management system for mental health patients which went on to achieve a significant market share supporting the NHS psychological therapy programme. Today, Mayden's products support services in adult and children's mental health, diabetes remission, veterans' services, cardiovascular disease prevention, addictions and neurodiversity services, not just in the UK but also in Australia, Canada and Ireland.

Chris writes both fiction and non-fiction.

In 2000, he published his first novel, Silent Light, and briefly gained a high ranking on the Amazon chart. His second novel, The Son of Man, is now out. Chris uses story, in the form of page-turning mystery thrillers, to explore deeper themes of humanity and the future world we are creating.

In 2006, he launched Healthcare Today, a magazine and website summarising healthcare news from around the world. While the magazine folded after twelve issues, the website became the number one healthcare news site on Google for the following few years, amassing thousands of daily readers.

His first non-fiction title, Made Without Managers, was jointly authored with colleagues at Mayden and published in 2023, attaining a Highly Commended honour at the Business Book Awards later that year. A second title, exploring data-driven healthcare, is due to be published in January 2026.
